Washington Massage Therapy

Continuing Education Requirements

Massage therapy license requirements vary from state to state, and the laws are constantly changing. It's our current understanding that, in Washington, the number of continuing education hours required for renewal is dependent upon the massage practitioner's date of license expiration:

For Washington massage practitioners with a renewal date between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2010 16 hours of massage therapy continuing education are required by their birth date. A maximum of 4 continuing education hours can be earned through home study.

For Washington massage practitioners with a renewal date after January 1, 2011 24 hours of massage therapy continuing education are required every 2 years, to include 4 hours in professional ethics, communication, and/or Washington state massage laws and regulations. Two of these four hours must include professional roles and boundaries. A maximum of 12 continuing education hours can be earned through home study or online programs.

The Board will not accept any programs pertaining to animal massage.

If you would like to verify this information, or have further questions regarding your massage therapy continuing education requirements, we suggest contacting the Washington Board of Massage directly. The telephone number for the Washington Board is 360-236-4835 or visit their website at https://www.doh.wa.gov.

Remember, the Institute for Integrative Healthcare Studies is approved by the NCBTMB as a continuing education Approved Provider (#049478-00). All of our continuing education programs can be used for your National Certification renewal.
